La Jolla's rich surfing heritage means you're learning in the same waters where surf legends began, but with none of the pressure. The crystal-clear waters offer visibility that builds confidence, and the year-round perfect climate means you're never too far from your next lesson.
La Jolla Shores is one of the City of San Diego's licensed surf-lesson concession areas, with four numbered sites near the lifeguard station. Permitted schools teach in the water in front of their assigned site, with at least one instructor for every five students, on soft foam boards with leashes. San Diego Lifeguards describe La Jolla Shores as a sandy beach about a mile long where, in summer, "waves at this beach are usually the most gentle of all San Diego beaches." That is a seasonal norm, not a promise: check the day's conditions with the lifeguard.
