Nusa Lembongan is a small island off Bali's east coast, and for a surfer it's a rare setup: three reef breaks in a row off the northwest coast, around Jungut Batu. Shipwrecks, Lacerations and Playgrounds are close enough together that you can pick between them on the day. Across a footbridge, Nusa Ceningan has a fourth.

Getting there is a fast boat from Sanur, which takes about half an hour.

This guide covers the breaks, the boat, and what to know before you book either.

Come here if

  • Intermediate surfers who want several reef breaks within paddling or a short boat ride of one beach
  • Surfers coming from Canggu or Uluwatu who want a slower island for a few days

Go elsewhere if

  • Complete beginners: every break here is reef, and there's no sand-bottom wave to learn on
  • Anyone expecting to walk on and off the boat with heavy bags: most operators land you in the water

The surf

Playgrounds

improver

The friendliest wave on the island and the busiest. It's a reef peak with lefts and rights, and on small days it suits improving surfers. The guides don't agree on much else: one calls it intermediate, another all levels, a third beginner to intermediate.SurfIndonesiaMondo SurfRapture SurfcampsBali Surfing Camp

Watch out: Sharp, shallow coral, a tight takeoff zone and the biggest crowd on the island. It breaks in front of the day-cruise pontoons.

Shipwrecks

A right-hander that can run over 200 metres, out in front of Jungut Batu. Two guides call it intermediate, one says experienced surfers only. It's a long paddle, so plenty of people pay a local boat driver to take them out.SurfIndonesiaMondo SurfRapture SurfcampsBali Surfing Camp

Watch out: Metal spikes left in the reef by old seaweed farms, and strong currents. Wear reef booties.

Tide
Mostly high and rising. One guide says it needs at least 1.4 metres of water over the reef. Another says it handles low tide better, so check on the day

Lacerations

The name is the warning. It's a right-hander over sharp, shallow reef, and SurfIndonesia calls it the island's most challenging wave. You reach it by boat or a long paddle from Playgrounds.SurfIndonesiaMondo SurfRapture Surfcamps

Watch out: Very shallow reef. Dangerous at low tide.

Across the bridge on Nusa Ceningan. Mostly a long left, and on smaller swells a peak that breaks both ways. It's usually less crowded than the Lembongan breaks.SurfIndonesiaMondo SurfBali Surfing Camp

Watch out: A hard current in the channel and sets that arrive with little warning. Watch the shallow inside reef on the paddle out from Secret Point Beach.

Getting there: the fast boat from Sanur

Almost everyone crosses from Sanur Harbour, on Bali's east coast. Fast boats take 30 to 45 minutes. One-way fares run from about IDR 175,000 to 450,000, depending on the operator and whether a hotel pickup is included. As one example from an operator's own fares page, Rocky Fast Cruise charges IDR 300,000 one way for the boat alone and IDR 400,000 with a door-to-door transfer.

Sanur's new harbour, open since late 2022, has a pier for the fast boats, though a 2026 guide says most operators still board through shallow water. Expect the same at the other end: on Lembongan most boats pull up on the beach at Jungut Batu or Mushroom Bay, and you step off into shallow water. Wear shorts and sandals, and bring a bag you can carry rather than drag. Rocky Fast Cruise is the exception, with its own jetty at Telatak.

Bringing a board? Rocky Fast Cruise carries surfboards free if you tell them when you book. We couldn't find a written board policy for the other operators, so ask before you pay.

The boats run in almost any weather. On the roughest days of the wet season, November to March, a crossing can be delayed, so if you're flying out the same day, take a morning boat back.

Learning to surf here

If you've never surfed, Lembongan isn't the place to start. Every break is reef, and even Playgrounds, the easiest of them, breaks over sharp coral. Learn on the sand-bottom beach breaks on Bali's west coast first, then come over once you can turn and get off a wave on purpose.

If you can already ride green waves, a lesson here is mostly about which break to surf on which tide, and that's worth paying for on an island where the guides disagree. GetYourGuide lists one Lembongan lesson, a two-hour session for all levels.

Flat days: Nusa Penida and the reef

Lembongan gets flat days, especially outside April to October. Nusa Penida, the big island next door, is the usual day out. GetYourGuide lists dozens of day trips that leave from Lembongan, many of them Penida tours and snorkelling trips. We haven't done them, so we're not ranking them here.

Where to stay and getting around

Stay in Jungut Batu if you're here to surf. It puts you closest to Shipwrecks, Lacerations and Playgrounds, and it's where the budget guesthouses are.

Scooters are the main way around, at about IDR 70,000 to 100,000 a day. The yellow footbridge to Nusa Ceningan, rebuilt in 2017, takes pedestrians and two-wheelers only.

Bring cash. There are ATMs, but they cap withdrawals and sometimes run out, and you'll need cash for scooter hire, snorkelling and day trips. Most resorts and restaurants take cards.

The island entry fee

Foreign visitors to Lembongan, Ceningan and Penida pay a Klungkung regency fee on arrival. From 2019 it was IDR 25,000 per adult and IDR 15,000 per child, one payment for all three islands, and since August 2025 it's card only.

In September 2026 the regency switched to a new 'One Gate One Destination' system, with an entry fee at the port plus separate tickets at some attractions. We couldn't find the new amount in any source we could read, so check at the harbour.

This is separate from Bali's own tourist levy, which you pay once when you arrive in Bali.

Common questions

Can beginners surf Nusa Lembongan?

Not as a first surf. All the breaks are reef, and the easiest, Playgrounds, still breaks over sharp coral. Learn on a sand-bottom beach break on Bali's west coast first. Once you can ride green waves, Playgrounds on a small day at mid to high tide is the place to start here.SurfIndonesiaMondo Surf

How do I get to Nusa Lembongan from Bali?

By fast boat from Sanur Harbour. The crossing takes 30 to 45 minutes and one-way fares run about IDR 175,000 to 450,000. Most boats land on the beach, so expect to step off into shallow water. The Lembongan TravellerThe Lembongan Traveller

Do the boats run in bad weather?

Almost always. Crossings are only delayed or cancelled on the roughest days, mostly in the wet season from November to March. If you're flying out the same day, take a morning boat back to Sanur. The Lembongan Traveller

Can I take my surfboard on the fast boat?

Usually, but check the operator. Rocky Fast Cruise carries boards free if you tell them when you book. We couldn't find written board policies for the others, so ask before paying.Rocky Fast Cruise

When is the best time to surf Nusa Lembongan?

The dry season, roughly April or May to October, when southwest swells and east to southeast winds line up for the west-facing reefs. Go early in the day for cleaner water and fewer people.SurfIndonesiaMondo SurfRapture Surfcamps
