Surf Lessons in Bali (2026): Where Beginners Learn, What It Costs

Seven beaches where Bali’s surf schools actually teach first lessons, which season suits each, and what a lesson costs.

Most of Bali's famous waves break over sharp reef, and none of them is where you learn. First lessons happen on a handful of softer beaches: the long sand beach from Kuta to Seminyak, the gentle reef at Batu Bolong in Canggu, and on the Bukit, Dreamland and Baby Padang. If a listing says 'Uluwatu beginner lesson', it's almost always taught at one of those, because the Uluwatu reef itself is for experts.

Season matters. From about April to October the southeast trade winds blow offshore on the west coast, which is where every beach below sits. From November to March the wind swings northwest and the good surf moves to the east coast, to reefs like Sanur and Keramas that aren't for beginners.

A group lesson at a Canggu or Kuta school costs about IDR 400,000 to 455,000 a person for 1.5 to 2 hours, with the board and rash guard included. That's our estimate from five schools' own 2025–26 price pages, linked on each entry below. Nobody on this team has reviewed these schools in person; everything here is researched and sourced.

Kuta (south-west coast) · A long sand beach break with surf schools all along it

Kuta Beach

Not visited yet

The classic place to learn. It's sand, not reef, and the whitewater runs a long way up the gentle slope, so you get long rides while you're still on your belly. The catch is rips: Kuta's consistent waves make several of them, and a coastal scientist counted at least three main ones in a single photo.

Bottom
Sand
Best for
First lessons. Best around mid tide
Season
Best April to October. Rapture also suggests it for beginners in the wet season
Watch out for
Rip currents. Stay between the red-and-yellow flags that mark the swimming area. River runoff and rubbish after rain in the wet season
Lesson price
Odysseys Surf School: from IDR 455,000 for 2 hours, board and rash vest included, lessons insured, hotel pickup in listed areas

Legian and Seminyak · The same sand beach, running north from Kuta

Legian and Double Six

Not visited yet

Rip Curl School of Surf's biggest school sits next to Double Six, and one of its instructors says most beginners start at Legian, where the waves are small and keep coming. Double Six itself suits improvers who've got past the whitewater, and it gets very shallow at low tide.

Bottom
Sand
Best for
First lessons at Legian; improvers at Double Six
Season
Best in the dry season, April to October
Watch out for
Double Six is very shallow at low tide, so surf it mid to high. Rubbish washes up in the wet season
Lesson price
Rip Curl publishes no price list. Its instructor puts beginners at 3 to 4 students per instructor

Canggu · Canggu’s beginner break: soft, slow waves over a flat bottom

Batu Bolong

Not visited yet

Where Canggu learns. The waves are soft and slow and reform, which suits beginners and longboarders. Guides describe the bottom four different ways, from 'flat reef' to 'sand and rock', so expect reef with sandy patches rather than a sand beach. There's no channel, so you paddle out through the whitewater.

Bottom
Reef and rock with sandy patches (sources disagree)
Best for
First lessons and longboarding. Best mid to high tide
Season
Best April to October, surfable all year. Murky water near river mouths after wet-season rain
Watch out for
Crowds, and shore pound on bigger days
Lesson price
Dian Surf School: IDR 400,000 a person, about 2 hours, max 3 per instructor, board and rash guard included. Surfing With Rocky: IDR 400,000 private, about 90 minutes, no transport. Bali Salty Surf: IDR 450,000 private

Canggu (Batu Mejan) · The next break along from Batu Bolong, with a channel

Old Man's

Not visited yet

A mellow wave right next to Batu Bolong. It's deeper reef with a clear channel for the paddle out, which makes it the natural next step once Batu Bolong feels easy.

Bottom
Reef with some sand
Best for
Your second week, not your first day
Season
Best April to October. Guides disagree on tide: one says mid to high, another low to mid
Watch out for
Crowds. It shares the beach with Batu Bolong
Lesson price
Same Canggu schools as Batu Bolong

Bukit Peninsula (near Uluwatu) · The Bukit’s one mostly-sand beach break

Dreamland

Not visited yet

If you're staying near Uluwatu, this is where you learn. It's mainly sand, best at the southern end of the beach, and forgiving at high tide. It can be deceptively powerful, and rocks on the inside plus a strong shore break make parts of it no good for beginners.

Bottom
Mostly sand, some reef
Best for
First lessons on the Bukit, at high tide
Season
Best April to October
Watch out for
Shore break, and rocks on the inside. Stay at the southern end
Lesson price
Bali Surfing Camp: £29 a session for non-guests, 1.5 to 2 hours, board, rash guard and transport to the break included

Padang Padang, Bukit Peninsula · The soft inside wave in the famous Padang Padang bay

Baby Padang

Not visited yet

The answer to 'where do Uluwatu beginners actually go?'. It's a soft reef sheltered by the headland, with a deep channel that makes the paddle out easy, and Rapture's Padang Padang camp teaches its beginners here and at Dreamland. It's still reef, not sand.

Bottom
Soft reef (one Rapture blog says sand; its own map says reef)
Best for
Beginners, with an easy paddle out through the channel
Season
Best April to October
Watch out for
It is reef. The main Padang Padang wave next door is for experts only
Lesson price
Most Uluwatu-area schools teach here; see the lessons linked below

Check Uluwatu lesson prices →Lessons sold as 'Uluwatu' are almost always taught at Baby Padang, Dreamland or Jimbaran.

Jimbaran Bay · A sheltered sand bay, the fallback when the swell is big

Jimbaran

Not visited yet

Soft sand in a sheltered bay. When the swell is too big for Dreamland and Baby Padang, the Bukit schools bring beginners here, so it's worth knowing the name if your lesson gets moved.

Bottom
Soft sand
Best for
First lessons on big-swell days
Season
Best April to October
Watch out for
It’s the big-swell fallback; on normal days the Bukit schools use Dreamland and Baby Padang
Lesson price
Bukit schools move lessons here as needed; same prices as Dreamland

Common questions

Where is the best place to learn to surf in Bali?

The sand beach from Kuta to Legian is the classic choice for a very first lesson, because there is no reef. Batu Bolong in Canggu is the other big beginner spot, with soft waves over a flat reef. Near Uluwatu, learn at Dreamland or Baby Padang, not at the Uluwatu reef.

How much does a surf lesson cost in Bali?

From the schools' own 2025–26 pages, about IDR 400,000 to 455,000 a person for a 1.5 to 2 hour group lesson with board and rash guard. Private lessons in Canggu start around IDR 400,000 to 450,000. Photos and video are usually extra.

When is the best time of year for surf lessons in Bali?

April to October, the dry season, when the trade winds blow offshore on the west coast where the beginner beaches are. In the wet season, November to March, the west coast is more onshore and murkier after rain, though Kuta and Canggu still have small waves to learn on.

How do I pick a good surf school in Bali?

Ask how many students each instructor takes: the schools we read cap groups at 3 to 6. Ask whether lessons are insured and whether instructors hold a lifesaving or first-aid award, which some schools name on their sites. And check that your own travel insurance covers surfing, which the Australian government's Smartraveller advice tells travellers to do for any activity.

Are surf camps in Bali worth it, and do they include lessons?

Check before you book, because 'surf camp' means different things. Lapoint's Canggu camp bundles five 2-hour lessons into its weekly price, from €529. Rapture's Padang Padang camp and Bali Surfing Camp sell the room, meals, yoga and video coaching, and charge for lessons separately.

Is it safe to surf at Kuta Beach?

With care. Kuta's waves make strong rips, and Smartraveller says rips cause the drownings of several Australians each year in Indonesia. Learn with a school, stay between the red-and-yellow flags, and in an emergency call 112.
