A warung is a small, family-run place to eat, often a roadside stall or a home kitchen. Bali Holiday Secrets and The Indonesia Guide both say ordering is simple. Point at the food you want, hold up fingers for how many, and ask "berapa?" for the price. Most of it's already cooked, so it's fast.

Bring cash. Bali Holiday Secrets says to carry IDR 10,000 and 20,000 notes. A full meal with a drink is usually about IDR 30,000 to 60,000. Last Call Bali gives 30,000 to 60,000, and Unfold Bali says it rarely tops 60,000. The Indonesia Guide says tourist areas charge 30% to 50% more. You don't need to tip. Many warungs sell out and close by mid-afternoon, so go at lunch.

At least two other guides name every warung below. They're in no strict order. Nobody on this team has eaten at any of them. None posts a menu we could read, so the prices are the guides' figures, and we say whose.

Common questions

What is a warung?

A small, family-run place to eat, usually a roadside stall or a home kitchen. The Indonesia Guide says there are two kinds. A warung makan sells rice, noodles and soups. A warung kopi sells coffee, tea and snacks.

How much does a meal at a warung cost in Bali?

About IDR 30,000 to 60,000 for a full meal with a drink. Last Call Bali says 30,000 to 60,000, and Unfold Bali says it rarely goes over 60,000. Unfold Bali puts roast pig places at about IDR 50,000 to 80,000. The Indonesia Guide says tourist areas charge 30% to 50% more.

Do Bali warungs take cards?

Mostly no. Bali Holiday Secrets says cash only, and Fattahgraphy says almost no warung accepts cards. There are exceptions: Bali Untold says Warung Local in Canggu takes cards. Carry IDR 10,000 and 20,000 notes.

What should I order at a warung?

Start with nasi campur: rice with your pick of sides. Guides also name babi guling (roast pig) and bebek betutu (slow-steamed duck). Then there's sate lilit (minced meat skewers) and lawar (chopped coconut and meat salad). Nasi goreng is fried rice, mie goreng is fried noodles, and gado-gado is vegetables with peanut sauce.

Is warung food vegetarian or halal?

Tempeh and tofu are everyday foods here. Last Call Bali says rice, tempeh, vegetables and sambal make a vegan plate. Watch for shrimp paste, though: ask for "tanpa terasi" (no shrimp paste). The Indonesia Guide says Bali serves a lot of pork because most people are Hindu. Halal warungs do exist, but we found no guide that lists them.

Do warungs close early?

Often. Last Call Bali says many lunch places close by 2pm and dinner places by 8 or 9pm, and popular ones sell out early. Fattahgraphy says peak freshness is 11am to 1pm.
