There are four brackets, and knowing which one you're in is most of the skill. A warung meal with a drink runs roughly IDR 25,000–50,000. A tourist-facing café charges IDR 65,000–120,000 for a smoothie bowl and IDR 75,000–130,000 for avocado toast. A mid-range restaurant meal is IDR 70,000–120,000, and fine-dining mains are IDR 200,000–600,000. Those are Unfold Bali's bands, published June 2026. Numbeo's Bali-wide index (22 June 2026) is consistent: IDR 50,000 for an inexpensive restaurant meal and IDR 575,000 for a mid-range three-course dinner for two.
Motel Mexicola publishes enough of its menu to make the gap concrete: tacos at IDR 60,000 each, guacamole at IDR 90,000, a grilled Angus sirloin at IDR 480,000 and a classic margarita at IDR 170,000. One taco costs about what a full plate of nasi campur and a drink costs at a Batu Bolong warung a few hundred metres away. That's not a reason to skip it, just a reason to know which one you're choosing.
Drinks are the quiet multiplier. Numbeo puts a domestic draught beer and a cappuccino at about IDR 40,000 each, Bali-wide, and Unfold Bali puts a specialty-café flat white at IDR 45,000–65,000. Motel Mexicola lists a Bintang at IDR 60,000 and a margarita at IDR 170,000. Two rounds before the food arrives can cost more than the food.
Check whether the menu is priced net or plus-plus. Local authorities set restaurant tax, capped at 10% of the tax base under national law, and the restaurant sets its own service charge on top. Neither is a tip and neither is optional. Motel Mexicola charges 10% tax plus 7% service, and 15% plus 7% after 10.30pm. Warungs and small cafés generally quote the price you pay. Carry cash, because many don't take cards.
