Published May 29, 2026SurfSpotGuide Editorial

The short answer

For most surfers, the Casio G-Shock G-Lide GBX100 (~$150) is the best value surf watch available. It has tide graph data, solar charging, 200m water resistance, and G-Shock durability. If you just want a watch that survives surfing without tide data, any G-Shock DW5600 or GA-2100 at $60–$95 is bulletproof.

Picks by Budget

Under $100 — Basic waterproof

Great starter

Best for: Beginners who need a waterproof watch but not tide data

Casio G-Shock DW5600$60–$80

The original. 200m rated, shock resistant, 5-year battery. No tide data but bulletproof durability at an unbeatable price.

Casio G-Shock GA-2100$75–$95

"CasiOak" — thinner profile than classic G-Shock. 200m, analog-digital display, solar-powered versions available. Popular with surfers who want something less bulky.

If you just want a watch that survives surfing, a basic G-Shock is the answer. No tide data, but unbeatable durability for the price.

$100–$200 — Tide data included

Best value for surfers

Best for: Regular surfers who want tide planning built into their wrist

Casio G-Shock G-Lide GBX100$130–$160

Dedicated surf watch with tide graph, moon data, and Bluetooth sync for updated tide tables. 200m, solar charging. The benchmark in this price range.

Rip Curl Search GPS Series 2$160–$200

Surf-brand pedigree. GPS tracking of surf sessions, 200m, tide data, and session log. More sport-watch than fashion watch.

This is the sweet spot for most surfers. The G-Lide GBX100 is the standard recommendation — tide data, solar charging, and G-Shock durability for around $150.

$200–$400 — GPS surf tracking

For serious surfers

Best for: Surfers who want session tracking, speed data, and multi-sport use

Rip Curl Search GPS$250–$300

Tracks surf sessions by GPS including wave count, speed, and time in the water. Syncs to the Rip Curl app. 100m rated.

Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000$350–$420

ISO diver-rated to 200m. Triple sensor (tide, depth gauge, compass). Designed for actual diving and heavy surf. Expensive but genuinely indestructible.

Only worth it if you want session data or dive-grade construction. The Rip Curl Search GPS is the most popular surf tracking option.

What to Look For

100m+ water resistance (10 ATM minimum)

Standard swim-rated watches (50m/5 ATM) cannot handle the pressure spikes from duck diving and wipeouts. 100m is the practical minimum for surfing.

Shock resistance

Boards hit watches. Water hits watches at speed. A surf watch needs impact resistance, not just water resistance. G-Shock and dedicated surf lines are built for this.

Tide graph data

The feature that separates surf-specific watches from ordinary waterproof watches. Tide data tells you when to paddle out and when conditions change.

Mineral crystal or sapphire lens

Plastic crystal lenses scratch badly on a single board impact. Mineral crystal is the minimum — sapphire is near-indestructible.

Simple, readable face

You need to read the time while squinting into the sun with saltwater in your eyes. Contrast, large numerals, and a backlight matter more than aesthetics.

Comfortable resin strap

Metal bands are uncomfortable under a wetsuit and corrosive in saltwater over time. Resin or rubber straps are the surf-standard for a reason.

What to Avoid

  • ✗Watches rated only 30m or 50m — these are splash-proof, not surf-proof. Duck diving will destroy them
  • ✗Fashion smartwatches (standard Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch) — not built for impact forces in the surf
  • ✗Metal-band watches — corrode in saltwater and are uncomfortable under a wetsuit sleeve
  • ✗Watches without a screw-down crown — the crown is the main water ingress point; push-pull crowns fail under pressure

Frequently Asked Questions

What water resistance do I need for surfing?

100m (10 ATM) minimum. Standard "30m water resistant" watches cannot handle the pressure spikes from duck diving and wipeouts. 200m is ideal.

Do surf watches actually track tides?

Yes — surf-specific watches from Rip Curl, Casio G-Shock G-Lide, and Suunto include tide graph data for thousands of locations. You set your nearest beach and get tide times, curves, and sunrise/sunset. Genuinely useful for planning sessions.

Is a G-Shock good for surfing?

Yes. Casio G-Shock is one of the most popular surf watch brands in the world. The G-Lide series includes tide and moon data specifically for surfers. The Frogman series is ISO diver-rated to 200m.

Can I wear a regular smartwatch surfing?

Most smartwatches are rated for swimming (50m) but not surfing impacts. The Apple Watch Ultra is the exception at 100m with a reinforced case. Standard Apple Watch and most Android smartwatches risk damage from surf impact forces.
