The Honest Answer

Surfing takes place in open water with currents, waves, and unpredictable conditions. Even in beginner lessons on small waves at sandy beaches, you will fall off your board and need to swim back to it.

Most reputable surf schools require you to be a competent swimmer before booking. It is a genuine safety requirement — not just a formality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you surf if you can't swim?

Not safely. You need basic swimming ability — enough to swim 50 meters and feel comfortable in open water. The ocean is unpredictable and being swept off your board does happen.

How strong a swimmer do you need to be to surf?

Comfortable in open water and able to swim 50 meters without stopping. You don't need to be fast — confidence matters more than speed.

Can you wear a life jacket while surfing?

A standard life jacket restricts movement too much for surfing. Your board with a leash acts as flotation. Some beginners use a surf vest in very small conditions.

Should I take swimming lessons before surf lessons?

If you cannot swim 50 meters comfortably, yes. Taking a few adult swimming lessons first will make your surf lessons much safer and more enjoyable.

Does a surf leash make it safe for non-swimmers?

A leash keeps your board near you but does not make it safe for non-swimmers. In chaotic whitewater, leashes can tangle or stretch. Never rely on a leash alone as your safety plan.
