Frequently Asked Questions
What does goofy foot mean in surfing?
Goofy foot means you surf with your right foot forward and your left foot at the tail of the board. Regular (also called natural) foot means the opposite — left foot forward, right foot back. Neither is better or worse; the term simply describes your natural riding stance.
How do I know if I’m goofy or regular?
The classic test is to have someone gently push you from behind when you’re not expecting it — whichever foot you step forward to catch yourself tends to be your back (power) foot on a board. You can also notice which foot leads when you slide across a slippery floor, kick a ball, or step onto a skateboard or snowboard.
Is goofy or regular better for surfing?
Neither. Roughly a third of surfers are goofy-footed and it has no bearing on how good you can get. Your stance only decides whether a particular wave is a frontside or backside ride for you — pros and world champions exist in both camps.
What is frontside and backside?
Frontside means you’re facing the wave as you ride along it; backside means your back is to the wave. A regular-footer rides a wave breaking to the right frontside, while a goofy-footer rides a left frontside. Most people find frontside easier to learn because you can see the wave the whole time.
