Frequently Asked Questions

How cold is too cold to surf?

With the right gear, there is no absolute limit. Without appropriate gear, below 55°F (13°C) becomes dangerous for extended sessions.

What water temperature is comfortable without a wetsuit?

Most surfers are comfortable without a wetsuit above 70°F (21°C). Between 65-70°F, a spring suit is recommended for extended sessions.

What are the signs of hypothermia while surfing?

Shivering, confusion, loss of grip strength, slurred speech, faster-than-normal exhaustion. Exit the water immediately if you experience these.

How long can you surf in cold water?

Depends on water temperature and your wetsuit. In 55-60°F water with a 4/3mm wetsuit, most surfers can surf 1-2 hours comfortably. In 45°F water even with thick gear, sessions should be shorter.
