The short answer
Ask these 5 key questions: (1) How many years teaching? (2) Class size? (3) Cancellation policy? (4) Lesson length & what's included? (5) What should I expect to achieve? Read reviews before booking. Avoid very cheap lessons, large groups, and schools with no cancellation policy.
Key Questions by Category
About the Instructor
- →How long have you been teaching? (Look for 5+ years)
- →What certifications do you have? (ISA, Surfing Australia, ASI, etc.)
- →Do you specialize in teaching beginners?
- →What's your teaching style? (Technique-focused vs. fun-focused)
About the Lesson
- →How long is the lesson? (60 min water time is standard)
- →What's included? (Board, wetsuit, instruction)
- →What's the group size? (Ask for typical class size)
- →What time of day? (Morning is usually calmest and best)

- →What's your cancellation policy? (Free cancellations within 24 hours?)
- →What if conditions are too rough? (Can I reschedule?)
- →What if it rains? (Most lessons happen in rain)
- →When are the best beginner conditions? (Ask them to recommend dates)

- →What safety equipment is available? (Rescue boards, first aid)
About Cost & Expectations

- →What should I expect to achieve in one lesson?
- →Can I rent a board after my lesson? (To practice alone)
Red Flags to Avoid
⚠ No teaching certification
Instructors should be certified by a recognized body (ISA, Surfing Australia, ASI). Certs show training in safety and pedagogy.
⚠ Very large group (15+)
You won't get enough attention. Instructor can't correct form or offer individual tips.
⚠ Vague cancellation policy
Ask directly. If they're evasive, walk. Non-refundable lessons are a red flag.
⚠ No mention of safety
A good school proactively discusses rip currents, ocean conditions, and rescue procedures.
⚠ Teaches in rough/dangerous conditions
Beginners should learn in calm, controlled conditions. If they push for big days, find another school.
⚠ No reviews or all 1-stars
Read Google/TripAdvisor reviews. If they have no reviews or terrible ones, find an alternative.
Pre-Booking Checklist
Frequently Asked Questions
Should you book the cheapest lesson?
No. $40 lessons might have large classes, poor instruction, or unsafe conditions. $60–$85 is reasonable. Cheap lessons = rushed learning.
How far in advance should you book?
Summer: 1–2 weeks ahead. Off-season: same-day often works. Always confirm weather 24 hours before.
What if you're nervous about the ocean?
Book a private lesson at a calm, protected beach with a patient instructor. Waikiki, Mission Beach, Folly Beach are good options.
Do you need to tell the school about injuries?
Yes. Shoulder issues, back problems, or recent injuries should be mentioned. Good schools adjust the lesson accordingly.
Should you watch your potential instructor?
Yes! If possible, watch them teach before booking. Their energy and student feedback matter.
