The short answer

Tip 15–20% in cash. A $60 group lesson = $9–$12 tip. A $150 private lesson = $22–$30 tip. Hand it over at the end of the session or ask for the tip jar. Most instructors are independent or small-business owners — tips are a huge part of their income.

Why Tipping Matters

For the instructor

Most surf instructors are freelance or small-business owners. Lesson fees go to rent, equipment, and overhead. Tips are their actual income. A good day of tips can mean the difference between making rent.

For the industry

Instructors who make good money stay in the job and get better. Tips incentivize quality instruction and keep experienced teachers at popular beaches instead of leaving the industry.

How to Tip Your Instructor

Cash at the end

Bring bills. Hand them to the instructor or drop in a tip jar. Most common.

Digital payment

Ask if they accept Venmo, PayPal, or card. Some have QR codes for tips.

Add to credit card

If you pay by card, ask if you can add a tip. Not all schools allow this.

Multi-lesson tip

For lesson packages, you can tip all at once at the end or per lesson.

Write a review

A 5-star Google/TripAdvisor review + a tip is the best combo. Reviews drive their business.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the lesson was terrible?

Tip less or not at all. But communicate respectfully. Most bad lessons are just incompatibility, not instructor incompetence. 10% is a polite minimum.

Should you tip group lessons differently?

You can split the tip equally among instructors, or tip one lump sum. A $60 group lesson: $10 total (or $5 each if two instructors).

What if you're short on cash?

Ask if they accept digital payment (Venmo, PayPal, card). Many do. Alternatively, tip less but promise to return.

Can you tip with a review instead?

A great review is valuable, but it doesn't pay the instructor's bills. Cash tips are preferred. Do both if possible.

Should you tip if lessons are included in a package?

Yes, but you can tip less (10% instead of 15–20%). The school already paid the instructor, but tips are still appreciated.
